How to find your way around Jimena ...
Jimena's Press Office has sent out a series of maps and instructions about how to find your way around the Old Quarter of the village over this puente (bridge, or long weekend) when you might want to put some flowers on someone's grave at the cemetery near the castle. The map comes from a GPS (SatNav) setting that you can find here (in Spanish, but with map): How to access the castle and How to find your way out from the castle. We, of course, are still trying to find our way out of Huelva, having accessed Jimena castle last weekend ...
Clocks go back tonight
Clocks throughout Europe go back one hour at 03:00 tonight, which magically, mystically, becomes 02:00 again. Innit mahvellous! We urge you not to take it personally, though, because you're getting the hour that was magically, mystically stolen from you in Spring ... enjoy the extra hour; make it yours!

Council warns that Endesa could cut power to homes without 'licencia de primera ocupación'
Jimena Council is advising residents that Sevillana-Endesa, the electric company, is applying a new disciplinary regulation and cutting off power to homes that, although occupied, have not obtained a licencia de primera ocupación ('first occupation licence') and are still using building power (licenced only for construction work). The Council therefore advises anyone without the licence to obtain one before Endesa proceeds to cut them off. To do so, it is only necessary to get in touch with the Oficina Técnica Municipal (Technical Office) at the Town Hall, or with the author of the house's plans, in order to speed up obtaining the licence. Here's who can help if you don't have enough Spanish:
Six new stalls at the Friday market
Perhaps you didn't notice, but there were six new stalls at the market this morning, according to a press release from the Council's Department of Markets, headed by Juana Jiménez. Over the last few weeks, a redistribution of Plaza Diego Prieto Bueno (that's its name, yes - Prieto Bueno was a reknown naturopath born in Jimena). The new distribution, as agreed by all stallholders regarding their real needs, made room for six of the fourteen stalls on the waiting list.
ARCGISA offices in Jimena and San Roque will no longer accept cash payments
JIMENA/SAN ROQUE (Press release) Aguas y Residuos del Campo de Gibraltar, S.A. (ARCGISA), the water, rubbish. etc. company is no longer allowing payment at their offices in Jimena or San Roque, although both offices will remain open to the public for any other business. Cash payment for the company's services must now be made at any of the banks that appear on their bills. The company reminds us of the convenience of direct debit.
Henrietta's painting course closes with exhibition
As we reported here, Hospedería Henrietta began its artistic career as a venue for artists, with a course titled Realism Painting that has been going on all this week under the direction of art historian and painter Fernando Martínez Romero. By all accounts, it has been a resounding success and the students are very pleased with the result, we're told - that is why they will be showing their work at an exhibition tomorrow evening, Saturday 30, from 8.30pm. This venture by Melissa González-Morgan deserves our, and official, support, as it may well turn into a regular feature of the establishment, and a specific tourism resource for Jimena, which badly needs it. See you there tomorrow!
What have you missed on CampoPulse?
These are just some of the headlines published on CampoPulse over the last couple of days: Marbella's Costa del Sol Hospital to start issuing 'shadow bills'; 12-year-old finds serious Firefox flaw; High speed chase catches alleged drug dealers; Caruana admits to problems with Forum talks; Guadiaro player among top 15 for Andalucía Valderrama Masters; The environment as political armament; Conspiracy theories rage over Paul the Psychic Octopus's death; 75% of countries perceived as corrupt; Campaign against tobacco smuggling brings both sides together; Spain collects €260 million from 'opaque' HSBC accounts in Switzerland; 28.55% unemployment in Andalucía; Algeciras film maker to show in New York's Big Screen Project; Government agrees to protect Tarifa's ancient walls; Casares uses golf cart to help elderly visit the cemetery. Did you miss something? Like our Start at the Beginning pronunciation feature?
National holiday on Monday, November 1
As might be expected, All Saints Day is also a bank holiday in Spain. Known as Tosantos in the colloquial, not only are all offices, banks, schools and shops closed but everyone visits their relatives in the cemetery, which is why you will se people in town you may never have noticed before (they're the alive ones) and flowers cost ten times as much as usual. It's a tradition that is in contrast to the imported Halloween festivites of the night before, which might explain why the people visiting the cemeteries tend to be older.
It's Friday, let's be happy!
We had to share this with you...
... a beautiful photo by Gonzalo Polo. He is an artist temporarily living in Jimena - his Facebook page is titled Jimenato por un Rato and is worth checking out, particularly two albums: Reflexiones de Jimena (Reflections of Jimena, which we've featured before) and A la Sombra de Jimena (In the Shadow of Jimena, which we haven't).

Calle Quirós gets pavement repairs
Calle Quirós gets pavement repairs to avoid flooding in homes during the rainy season. Residents of the street had complained to the Council that the edges had been damaged owing to the increase in traffic caused by roadworks on Calle Sevilla and were therefore concerned that rain would create humidity or flooding on a stretch that presents many levels to the homes on it. The work, started this morning, was included in another employment scheme that has been in operation at the Eastern etrance to the village, though nothing to do with that on Sevilla.
Trying to find a solution to the La Adelfilla traffic conundrum
According to a press release received this afternoon, the Mayor of Jimena, Pascual Collado, met this morning with the head of the Roads department of the provincial Public Works authority, Alberto Bas, as well as residents of the La Adelfilla area, some 8 kilometres from the main village towards the coast. The objective was to try to find a solution to the traffic problems that residents, farmers and businesses have been complaining about. These include lines on the road that make it illegal to make certain turns into or out of several of the roads leading to homes and farms, forcing drivers to take a very long journey to the nearest roundabout or risk fines and danger.>

Jimena artist to hold exhibition in San Roque
Juan Soler, who lives in Jimena and works all over the place, has been invited to hold an exhibition of his paintings at the Sala Joven Rooms at the Diego Salinas Building in San Roque (right next to the new Town Hall, sightly downhill from the main square). Titled Las pieles del poeta (The Poet's Skins), the exhibition will be inaugurated on Tuesday November 2 and remain open until the 12th. Born in La Línea de la Concepción in 1966, Juan Antonio Soler is a painter, sculptor, writer, graphic designer and photographer, among a lot of other things. Please see more about Juan Soler on JimenArte, one of our partner sites.
Calle Sevilla and Romo to return to normal 'imminently'
(Photo: TioJimeno) According to a press release received this afternoon (and confirming TioJimeno's conclusion regarding a traffic sign we posted this morning, see below), the stretch of Calle Sevilla between the Cajasol corner and Autoridad Portuaria (the 'ski slope') will be open to traffic in its usual direction imminently (our italics), according to the municipal Department of Public Works and the Local Police. The same is true of Calle Romo, traffic on which which will be now be directed downhill. Traffic on the ski slope, however, will only head downhill. The communiqué also says that there will be a speed limit in effect (no specification) on Sevilla, especially in front of the Town Hall, because this has not yet received its tarmac (Question: Have any councillors driven up or down pretty well any street in the village in the last five years? If so, have they noticed any tarmac anywhere?). But there is more, and we quote/translate:>
Five arrested in Jimena robbery
JIMENA (Press release/Photo: illustration only) Yesterday, the Guardia Civil from Jimena and Castellar arrested five people, including two minors, for allegedly stealing copper cable from the Las Buitreras electricity station. The incident took place when the GC, who were carrying a control point at the entrance to the municipality of Jimena from the A-405, at dawn. When they stopped two cars, one behind the other, for speeding, the first one slowed down but the one behind, a Skoda Fabia Combi, tried to avoid the control point, swerving sharply and coming off the road. The two occupants ran away on foot. Having been unable to stop them, the agents searched the vehicle, where they found a large amount of copper cable covered by black rubber insulation. Checking back to the first car, which had been retained with its occupants, they found that the driver's hands were stained black. Further inspection revealed a metal saw with replacement blade in the spare tire compartment. The driver, answering to the initials C.C.A., ad the two minors in the car were arrested and charged with robbery. Further investigation took the GC to>
How to get lost in Jimena!
Further to a recent JP item on the subject (that included what we think is an approximately accurate map), our good friends at TioJimeno have saved us the trouble of walking up to photograph this 'road map' - we wouldn't dare take the car! The map is headed ATENCION: INCIDENCIAS POR OBRAS, which must be bureaucratese for WATCH IT! But we'll translate TioJimeno's article (loosely ,but agreeing with everything it says, and more): "If someone from outsde Jimena tries to obtain information from this, they'll have a job. To start with it says Calle Autoridad Portuaria is closed (they'd have to look up Google Maps to find this street as it isn't on any SatNav system - note: nor, for that matter, on JP's Google Maps either), referring to what we on JP know as 'the ski slope'.>
Illegal bird catchers caught in Jimena
JIMENA The Guardia Civil's Seprona unit based in Castellar, on patrol by the Guadiaro River in the municipality of Jimena, last week caught three men hunting with illegal nets forbidden by law. These, called redes de tiro in Spanish, are spread out over an area of trees or on open ground (photo) to catch finches, linnets and other smaller birds (which are often served up, also illegally, as pajaritos fritos, or fried little birds). The birds caught in this operation were released and the men reported for hunting illegally (a common practice in the area, incidentally) and for possession of forbidden hunting material. (This item also on CampoPulse)
Water cut in San Pablo tomorrow morning
ARCGISA, the water company, announces that water supply to San Pablo will be cut off tomorrow morning, from 9am to 1pm due to maintenance and improvements to the system.
Ready for an art exhibition?
There is a persistent rumour in the artistic circles of Jimena that the bell tower in the main square, (photo) Plaza de la Consitución though better known as El Paseo, is being considered as a place to hold an upcoming art exhibition - or is being prepared for one, depending on who you listen to. It will obviously need much cleaning if an exhibition is intended for the inside, but it seems to us to be a wonderful idea: couldn't be more central, plenty (?) of parking, unusual, etc. We will be asking at the Town Hall but in the meantime, does anyone know anything about it?

It's Monday, is this how you feel?
This is becoming a nice co-operative habit. Phil Heinzl sends in an appropriate picture to what he calls The Monda Morning Feeling, and we publish it. Thanks, Phil. (Shhh: in our reply to his e-mail we said we'd forgotten what Monday mornings felt like as they're all like this now... but don't tell anyone.) If you need to look more closely at the dog's teeth, just click on the photo. Actually, there's more to this item. We're planning a special Nature section, or possibly a separate/linked site, where Mother Nature will have her way with our -and your- photos. We're looking for a good name for it, can you help?

Another golf course for Jimena?
JIMENA (Image: Bogaris website) Apparently so, according to EuropaSur this morning. The newspaper reports that the Andalucía based Spanish company, Bogaris, is merely waiting for the Junta de Andalucía to approve some of its golf resort projects, including one called Jimena Golf Resort. According to the company, it is to be built at the Southern end of the municipality, mostly within the San Martín del Tesorillo area, and is in the 'final phase of procedure'. Aside from several projects in a range of industries in Spain, Bogaris operates in Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Chile and Mexico. (This item also on CampoPulse)

Many thanks to George Foster for a gift to Jimena
George Foster (r.) and Liz are not visiting Jimena by chance. They are friends of Francis Cherry (to whom best wishes for a quick recovery from a triple by-pass!) and stayed until this morning at Briany's El Chirimoyo B&B. George brought with him a BBC documentary directed by his friend Mike Dibb, 'The Spirit of Lorca', part of which was filmed in Jimena in 1986 and made in collaboration with reknown hispanist Ian Gibson. However, in addition to the film itself, Dibb also shot extra material for a possible film on Flameco, Although it was never finished, the material features several people of Jimena singing at the old Peña Flamenca. George also gave this material to Ricardo 'TioJimeno' Gómez, who will be putting up the latter unedited pieces on his site, from which we will be stealing it. In the photo is Harriet Gilmour, who was instrumental in making all the connections. Many thanks, George, for the effort.

Campo History workshops get under way
The 11th edition of the Jornadas de Historia del Campo de Gibraltar, organized by the Instituto de Estudios Campogibraltareños, got under way this afternoon at the Rena Sofía Cultural Centre. After various introductory addresses, the inaugural lecture came from Jimena's Official Chronicler, José Regueira Ramos, whose subject was the maritime connection between his native Galicia and Andalucía, particularly with the Campo de Gibraltar. See the whole programme here; a fascinatingly wide coverage of the area's history.
No power cut for Jimena - only San Pablo
Further to our Reader's Question of yesterday, the Town Hall says that they have had no official notification from Endesa about there being a power cut in Jimena any time soon. The last notification was one issued for San Pablo, which has apparently created a rush on candles from the Chinese shop in the village. If the lights go out this evening, then it's for some other reason (in our case, because we haven't paid the bill). Presumably the repair work being carred out in San Pablo has something to do with the high voltage cable falling onto the railway tracks recently.

Pronouncing Spanish - start at the beginning
One of the first things we learned at school was the alphabet (A is for Apple, B is for - what was it?). So we're here and now announcing a 'letter a day' pronunciation system. But to take advantage of it, as we hope you will, you'll have to go over to CampoPulse. Oh, you clever thing you - you've just realized that this is just a trick to get you to move over there, haven't you? Well, you're wrong. It's a trick with which you'll impress your friends by reciting the Spanish alphabet. No, seriously, give it a try here, and let us know there what you think of it.
Theatre, Dance and Yoga for under-5s starting soon
(Press release) Jimena's Department of Culture announces a Theatre, Dance and Yoga class for under-5s starting next month. Registration is open until October 27 (next week!). Monitors Euduvigis Collado and Lola Arjona are scheduling to start on November 2. Registration forms available at Town Hall and municipal offices in San Pablo and Estación, and more information on 672 682 973, 609 160 513 or 956 641 282.
Renovation of Casita de Campo in Tesorillo began this week
(Press release) An employment scheme to help municipalities, PAME, is allowing for urgently needed repairs to one of San Martín del Tesorillo's singular places: La Casita de Campo. Outer walls are being reconditioned, as are the gardens in front and at the back. The 'little country house' has an interesting history, being as it was the residece of local landowners, the Larios family. Constructed in a British style, it fell into disuse last century and a campaign for its restoration was under way. (Prospero comment: Good news, this. Q. How about an article on the casita? - A. Yes, boss.)
Reader's question: Will the power cuts in San Pablo affect Jimena?
(Via e-mail) "Just heard that some residents of San Pablo have been advised by notices that the electricity is going to be cut off there for (I think) 3 consecutive nights from 9pm until 5am starting tomorrow night. Do you know anything about this? If this is correct, will it affect Jimena? Would appreciate anything you can find out." Can anyone confirm this notice in San Pablo and the dates, please? So far, our answer: "If you had your lights or computer on last night, you have an answer. We had several, at least 4, short cuts over yesterday's 24 hours. So the answer is yes. Whether they continue today is a mystery. If the cuts in San Pablo have been advised by notices, but not Jimena, then the chances are that if we're affected we would know via similar notices."
