Ruta de la Plata, Blues and Food - a different route at Henrietta's

We can no longer be surprised by Melissa's sense of enterprise. She and her team at Casa Henrietta just don't stop. For the last several months we have witnessed and tasted all kinds of dishes from the Silk Route. This new one is closer to home, though. The Ruta de la Plata translates to The Silver Route, an old Roman road that runs along the Western side of Spain that is also one of several roads of the Camino de Santiago (image). Casa Henrietta will be offering a weekly  selection of dishes from places along this route - every Saturday evening from 8.30 pm, at only €17. However, to start things off, this first Saturday -TOMORROW- is special: Dinner & Blues, featuring Álvaro Fernández Gaviría plus his students taking part in the course on Blues he has been holding all this week at Casa Henrietta.

The last of the Silk Trail on Saturday

Melissa at Casa Henrietta tells us that this Saturday, October 22, will mark the end of the establishment's long trip along the Silk Trail, so book your table to say 再见 (zài jiàn ... er, that's good-bye, we believe). But don't despair, she has more plans afoot but don't tell her we told you: next Saturday she is doing a sample menu of all the places her kitchen has visited since it started out on the Trail back in May, including Italy, Greece, Lebanon, Persia, Thailand and China.

On the Silk Road at the weekend

Prospero has only just recovered from the magnificent meal he was kindly invited to on Saturday evening at Casa Henrietta. The place was full: extra tables had to be set up, the kitchen was bustling with familiar faces almost unable to lift heads from chopping boards, the friendly 'waitresses' remained friendly despite the rush - and absolutely everyone said how good the meal was. It was what in Spain is called a menú degustación, taken directly from the French, which means a try-it-and-see kind of thing. Try it we all did, and liked it - well, there was nothing left on the plates that we saw returning to the kitchen. Best of all, there was a very good turnout of local Spanish guests, mostly the younger, more adventurous generation. Keep it up, Melissa and great team! (The Chinese Silk Road menu is on Saturdays from 8pm for the whole of this month.)

China is close to the end of the Silk Road

JIMENA The magnificent effort made by Melissa and her crew at Casa Henrietta is coming to an end. BUT October brings us to China, and therefore Chinese cooking on every one of this month's Saturday evenings from 8pm.  It's a great idea to book ahead on 956 648 130 because this offer has become very popular. Prospero has been lucky enough to be invited this Saturday and is really looking forward to it. (P.S. Just wait for what they have in mind for the season: watch this space!) Also, these posters by Gonzalo Polo are wonderful works of art. Click on this one for a full view of Tin Tin in China.

Thailand is on the Silk Road at Henrietta's

We mentioned this before but we couldn't resist Gonzalo Polo's lovely (if almost unreadable) poster announcing the fact that this month is Thailand on Henrietta's Silk Road campaign. So, every Saturday evening, starting at 8pm, you can enjoy the scrumptious meals of that exquisite country - right here in Jimena! A great painting holiday in Jimena

Casa Henrietta is run by an artist, so it's not surprising that she is excited at promoting her profession with passion. And that is why Melissa González-Morgan (sometimes mis-called Henrietta) has invited renown painter Fernando Martínez Romero to Casa Henrietta to hold a fascinating course on landscaping with egg tempera from September 26 to October 1st. The course goes back to the early roots of classical painting, using the technique of egg and cassein tempera. But you can get all the information from the poster, or by calling Melissa on (landline) 956 648 130, (mobile) 697 523 329; and soon on the Casa Henrietta website. Registration closes on September 12!

Seryan Sax at Henrietta's

You read that right! It says Seryan Sax at Henrietta's and has nothing to do with sex. It has to do with music, good music. We know because we know one of the duo quite well. Ana Rojas plays the sax and so does Sergio Jiménez - Seryan Sax - and they're doing it this coming Friday, August 12 from 10.30pm in a Feria Special performance. See you there!

A new journey along the Silk Trail at Henrietta's

Saturday, April 30, is the last of Casa Henrietta's Thai Nights but not the last of an excellent idea. Henrietta's restaurant will be open on Friday and Saturday nights for a journey you will not want to miss. Let's join Melissa and her team in exploring the cuisine of the countries along the Silk Trail. The journey starts on Friday May 6th in Italy, and continues to Greece in June. Monthly destinations will be Lebanon, Persia, Thailand before finally arriving in China. Watch this space for details.

Henrietta's painting course closes with exhibition

As we reported here, Hospedería Henrietta began its artistic career as a venue for artists, with a course titled Realism Painting that has been going on all this week under the direction of art historian and painter Fernando Martínez Romero. By all accounts, it has been a resounding success and the students are very pleased with the result, we're told - that is why they will be showing their work at an exhibition tomorrow evening, Saturday 30, from 8.30pm. This venture by Melissa González-Morgan deserves our, and official, support, as it may well turn into a regular feature of the establishment, and a specific tourism resource for Jimena, which badly needs it. See you there tomorrow!
