JIMENA /San Martín del Tesorillo Juan Ángel Gómez and partner Anja Tiedeman are behind many of the carnival's costumes. With a workshop in Estaión, they are masters at the use of foam rubber and work on this professionally for theatre and film. Now they are offering a course through the local ELA authorities in Tesorillo, basically about creating volume, painting it and creating templates. The course is one day a week, initially for a month's duration. Places are limited to those over 15 and the cost is €30 per person. "We won't be celebrating Father's or Mother's Day at school"

JIMENA/San Martín del Tesorillo (Source: TioJimeno) This note was handed to parents by their children at the school in Tesorillo. It reads as follows: "We wish to inform you that under the new instruction regulations, and because the concept of family is changing, we will not be celebrating Father's or Mother's Day, as we will be carrying out activities related to The Family Day, on May 15. Signed by the pre-school and 1st and 2nd grade teachers. " The father who sent it in to TioJimeno was unable to explain things to his child.

Top of the list

For the first time in history (according to Prospero's not very reliable memory) we have a complete schedule of dates for the various events, ferias and fiestas in the municipality of Jimena, with only a couple of tentative ones yet to be set. The first of these is Carnaval, scheduled for the weekend of February 24, 25 and 26, and for which we have stolen the poster from TioJimeno, who is closer to these things than we are (well, he works right next to the Ayuntamiento). We can but thank the Councillor in charge of the municipality's festivities (don't ask who, 'cos we don't know but will find out) for what we hope is a degree of forward planning we are unaccustomed to here. Food collection for children in need

JIMENA / Tesorillo The annual collection of food for children in need takes place this afternoon at 6pm on the main square in Tesorillo, together with villancicos of the season. Let's bring our contribution and our best wishes.

Ten arrested in weekend operations in Tesorillo

JIMENA / San Martín del Tesorillo The Guardia Civil detained a total of ten people in two separate incidents over last weekend. The first incident was a street fight outside a disco, in which six were arrested. The quarrel also involved others who were severely injured and needed medical attention. The second involved four people who allegedly set fire to a car, having previously damaged it heavily, and which spread to another two vehicles in the immediate vicinity. The fire also caused damage to the Town Hall offices as well as the post office. All the arrested are now 'at the disposal of the courts'.

Slippery roads ahead

JIMENA (First published on 20/09/08) The first rain of the season is all too often marked by an increase in road accidents. The technical reason is that the oil accumulated in the pores of the road over the summer rises to the surface making it very slippery. The main reason, however, is that drivers fail to adapt to the new conditions and travel much too fast. Two recent accidents, one in Jimena and the other in Tesorillo illustrate the point. Large truck gets stuck on Marchenilla road

JIMENA/Marchenilla (Source: www.buceite.com) A trailer truck carrying 40 tons of oranges from the Cooperative in San Pablo, got stuck on the road to Marchenilla in the early hours of Saturday. Driven by a Bulgarian, it had left San Pablo towards Tesorillo via the CA-8200 road -in theory closed to traffic because of rain damage- but on arrrival at Tesorillo found that it had to go through the village. It happens that Carnival was on, and the Local Police advised the driver to turn back and take the A-405 through Marchenilla. With a complicated manouevre, he turned around and took the advice. Of course, he did'nt know the state of that road (did the police?), which has been in a dreadful state of disrepair for years and is rarely used other than by knowledgeable local drivers with appropriate vehicles. The truck eventually got stuck and stayed there the rest of the night until a crane was brought in to remove it (photo). The trouble is that, aside from the state of the CA-8200, which is worsened daily, lorries are not allowed on it and are often fined. However, this is the only reasonable way for the oranges collected at the San Pablo Cooperativa to reach market.

Couple and two children rescued from flood on Montenegral road

JIMENA/San Martín del Tesorillo (Agencies/Photo of CA 2101, illustration only) A couple and their two nephews aged 11 and 8, had to be rescued yesterday from their 4WD on the CA-2101 near Montenegral. The vehicle was forced off the road by the water of the Guadiaro river that had risen above the road surface, and got trapped, and stopped, by a large rock. It took the fire rescue service two hours to get them to safety, but the car had to be left behind as it proved impossible to pull it out. (Prospero note: This is the same road that local politicians are now demanding repairs and reconditioning for, a subject that comes up every four years, mysteriously coinciding with elections - and always with the same result: nil. JIMENA/San Martin del Tesorillo (Agencies) Readers will forgive the use of a railway simile when we're talking about roads, but Jimena Mayor Pascual Collado (PSOE - photo, centre, with Councillor Mercedes Segovia and Tesorillo candidate Jesús Solís) was at the offices of Mancomunidad in Los Barrios while Tesorillo Mayoress Belen Jarillo (PP) was just across the road at the Guadacorte Hotel, having called a press conference for yesterday at 10.30 and 11 am respectively. The objective was exactly the same in both instances: to publicize the demand for immediate repairs and widening of the A-2102 and A-2103 roads that connect Tesorillo with San Enrique and the A-7. This are the roads that offer the natural, easiest exit of produce to the Guadiaro Valley and beyond, but are much too narrow for large vehicles and have very deep, dangerous ditches on either side. (Editorial: The objective is the same: to protect drivers on these roads, among other things. Can't the blessed politicians put aside their petty differences even for this cause?)

Jimena Carnival coming up!

JIMENA The Carnival in Jimena is scheduled for the weekend of March 11, 12 and 13. As usual, the main tent will be set up behind the primary school and the noisy rides, if any, on the market square. The other Carnivals in the municipality are as follows: Tesorillo, 18, 19 & 20; and San Pablo, 25,26 & 27.

Flamenco dance classes in Tesorillo

JIMENA/San Martín del Tesorillo (Press release) Flamenco dance classes will be starting soon under the direction of Isabel Núñez, who has offered her expertise for a number of years now. At a price of €20, these classes are aimed at adults. Classes will be held at the ELA building, where more information is also available, as it is on 956 618 096.

Over €3.72 millions land in Tesorillo

JIMENA/Martín del Tesorillo (Agencies) A single winner on yesterday's Primitiva tFirst Prize grabbed €3,727,450.63. The news came down early this morning when people began gathering at the stand on the main square, Plaza de la Constitución, where the ticket was sold. There was no news about the winner's identity as this was written, but there was a noticeable absence of bank managers at their desks this morning...

Tesorillo historical property gets approval for ownership by municipality

JIMENA/San Martín del Tesorillo (Press release) The building known as La Casita de Campo (Little Country Home - though the diminutive is more ironic than real) that was one of many country homes of the Dukes of Larios, and located in San Martín del Tesorillo, will at last become the property of the municipality of Jimena. The procedure, which began several years ago, involved coming to an agreement with the owners of the property, among many things. The property that will be owned by Jimena when the deeds are signed at the end of the present stage of procedures, has a total area of over 8,000 square metres, of which 566.37 belongs to the Casita itself (photo). However, the property will be put to what is described as a socio-economic use and the area on which its stands will be improved and renovated and will probably include development in a variety of ways.

Tesorillo school gets a makeover

JIMENA/San Martín del Tesorillo (Press release/Photo: TioJimeno) Maintenance and repair work at the José Luis Sánchez primary school in San Martín del Tesorillo was completed recently thanks to €40,000 and the Junta's Plan Proteja. Both of the school's building underwent work that included improvements to the sports facilities, elimination of 'architectural barriers', reorganization of spaces to acquire an extra classroom and repairs to the front. The next work to be carried out here will begin when the school year ends in June and will consist of a new dining room, with a budget of €140,000.

Tesorillo man attacks neighbour with a knife

JIMENA/San Martín del Tesorillo (Europa Press) A man responding to the initials M.H.E. is in prison after he attacked a neighbour with a knife last Thursday, accoring to a relese from the Guardia Civil. The man is apparently subject to mental illness and had made previous unprovoked attacks, though without such serious consequences. The victim, a neighbour who happened to be passing by the perpetrtor's door, fell to the ground as was able to shield his chest from the knife by raising his legs, which is where he has severe cuts being treate t the La Línea Hospital. M.H.E. is detained awaiting his appearance in court.

Two divorces, one marriage?

JIMENA/CASARES (Agencies) Secadero, at one end of the straight stretch over the bridge, belongs to the municipalitry of Casares,  province of Málaga. At the other end of the bridge road is San Martín del Tesorillo, which belongs to Jimena de la Frontera, province of Cádiz. Both of these villages, however, are in a more or less advanced stage of separation from their mother municipalities. This happens through an ELA (Entidad Local Autónoma, or Local Autonomous Entity), a sort of quasi-independent Council, often of a different political colour to its mother. Such, at any rate, is the case with Tesorillo (as it is known to its friends - others call it San Martin). Given their proximity, there is always the possibility of intimacy despite the river that separates them. Lovers will always find a way. If and when they both obtain their divorces, it is not impossible to imagine that they will marry each other to form their own municipality, or join another one such as rich San Roque. Just a thought probably ahead of its time...

Council approves agreement with ministry on castle restoration

JIMENA (Press release / Photo: www.miguelangeltabales.com) The Council's plenary session of this morning approved an agreement of cooperation with the central Ministry of Development that will allow to begin work on the castle's renovation (first reported here). Approval by the Council was a prerequisite to obtaining part of the nearly €1 million the work will cost from the ministry, the procedure for which had a deadline of December 10. Mayor Pascual Collado said that the Junta de Andalucía has carried out five phases of archaological digs and studies at the castle over the last few years, the principal conclusions of which pointed out the need for action, so that it can be 'put into value' (Prospero note: translation of 'make available for tourism', we think). Thus, the central government will finance>

Province approves Tesorillo separation

JIMENA (Agencies) The initial stage of the 'divorce' of San Martin del Tesorillo from the municipality of Jimena de la Frontera was set yesterday by Diputacion de Cadiz, the provincial authorities. The next step is that the documentation must be presented to the Junta de Andalucia, which has the final say in the matter. The Junta has 18 months to do so; if it does, the Mancomunidad de Municipios will include eight municipalities instead of the present seven. Belen Jarillo (PP), who heads the ELA, and Pascual Collado (PSOE), Mayor of Jimena, were present when the plenary session of the provincial authority made the unanimous decision. They both said they were pleased by the decision. (Watch this space for What does this mean to residents of either?)

Renovation of Casita de Campo in Tesorillo began this week

(Press release) An employment scheme to help municipalities, PAME, is allowing for urgently needed repairs to one of San Martín del Tesorillo's singular places: La Casita de Campo. Outer walls are being reconditioned, as are the gardens in front and at the back. The 'little country house' has an interesting history, being as it was the residece of local landowners, the Larios family. Constructed in a British style, it fell into disuse last century and a campaign for its restoration was under way. (Prospero comment: Good news, this. Q. How about an article on the casita? - A. Yes, boss.)

Tesorillo gets new signage and speed bumps

(Press release) A series of so-called 'vertical signs' went up this morning in San Martín del Tesorillo, and several speed bumps were laid under the supervision of Mayor Pascual Collado and Councillors Fernando Gómez, Jesús Rodríguez and Mercedes Segovia (the latter two from Tesorillo). Work was carried out by local company Gavisan with a budget from the Plan E employment scheme of €27,000. Some months ago elevated zebra  crossings that also serve as speed bumps were installed on the main road through the village.
