JIMENA Long time resident Patricia Lucas (also known as Pat Fender) is holding an exhibition of her fabulous paintings this weekend at the Casa Verde de Agaden (Calle Sevilla 51, just below the town hall) in Jimena from Friday, June 1 to Sunday, June 10. Opening hours are from 5 to 9pm. Pat has a magnificent way with wild flowers in her paintings, mostly landscapes - but we really want to know what is new.

Art exhibition is extended after grand success
JIMENA The art exhibition titled Por Amor al Arte (For the Love of Art, and, certainly, related to Valentine's Day) that is being held at Casa Verde (C/Sevilla, 51) is being extended until March 10th, it has just been announced. The work on show has been praised by lots of people but there still many who for one reason or another have been unable to see it. Hours, evenings from 5 to 9 on weekdays, and all day on weekends.

For the love of Art
JIMENA It's a time for love, according to the calendar (we thought it was all the time, but Tuesday is Valentine's Day, according to trade and commerce). But this a different kind of LOVE, Carolina tells us from Case Verde Agaden. "We have invited local artists to exhibit for a week," says she. So, the exhibition opened today, and remains so until Friday next, the 17th. Opening hours are the Casa Verde usual: Afternoons from 5 to 9 on weekdays, and all day on weekends. Ah, it is also open all day on Tuesday. (Prospero note: The Casa Verde is one Jimena's prize houses, renovated and maintained by Agaden, the environmental pressure group, with the help of us all: there is a nice little shop and a lovely cup of coffee -or something stronger. Well worth a visit! It's just below the Ayuntamiento on Calle Sevilla.)

Pottery exhibition at Henrietta's
JIMENA Jan Bradley is a potter. She is also a teacher of pottery with a good number of students - and it is they who will be holding the annual exhibition of their work at Casa Henrietta on Friday and Saturday this weekend (then there's Henrietta's Christmas Market on Sunday!). Inauguration is on Friday at 7pm. Once upon a time, the exhibition coincided with the Music Festival, so this is a good alternative time. It is always a pleasure to see how much creativity there is in the village. See you there!

A great painting holiday in Jimena

Casa Henrietta is run by an artist, so it's not surprising that she is excited at promoting her profession with passion. And that is why Melissa González-Morgan (sometimes mis-called Henrietta) has invited renown painter Fernando Martínez Romero to Casa Henrietta to hold a fascinating course on landscaping with egg tempera from September 26 to October 1st. The course goes back to the early roots of classical painting, using the technique of egg and cassein tempera. But you can get all the information from the poster, or by calling Melissa on (landline) 956 648 130, (mobile) 697 523 329; and soon on the Casa Henrietta website. Registration closes on September 12!

Coming from this Thursday, July 14, at Casa Henrietta (C/Sevilla 44): "Animaladas", an exhibition of sculptures by Gonzalo Polo. Opening at 8:00 pm. Exhibition will be on until the 7th of August. A fascinating collection of mainly iron animals often made from old tools and other bits and pieces. (The Spanish word animaladas is very loosely, and badly, translated to 'animalations' - thought you should know...)

'Taking a look at local art'
'Local' depends on where you're located, of course. We happen to be headquartered in Jimena, so this art exhibition is local to us. However, the place it is being held is well worth a visit, no matter where you're located. La Estación is a restaurant in a little country railway station (San Pablo de Buceite) that is still in use and where we have actually seen people get off the train and carry their suitcase through the bar (they did look a bit surprised, admittedly) - but we're off on a tangent again. Find out more about the artists and their work.

Painting Jimena in Australia
Hang on, let's see if we got this right. This is a photo of Lizzie (Elizabeth Gray), who lives and works in Australia but is possibly South African. Lizzie is a friend of Renate who is South African but lives in Jimena . And Lizzie is painting a great big picture of Jimena. Is that about right, ladies? Is there anything more we need to know? Like, why? Has Lizzie been to Jimena yet? If not, why not? Who's the picture for? Things like that. (Memo to monkeys: Send the link to this item to Lizzie and Renate. Maybe they can elucidate with a comment or two... Memo from monkeys: Yes, boss!)

Henrietta's painting course closes with exhibition
As we reported here, Hospedería Henrietta began its artistic career as a venue for artists, with a course titled Realism Painting that has been going on all this week under the direction of art historian and painter Fernando Martínez Romero. By all accounts, it has been a resounding success and the students are very pleased with the result, we're told - that is why they will be showing their work at an exhibition tomorrow evening, Saturday 30, from 8.30pm. This venture by Melissa González-Morgan deserves our, and official, support, as it may well turn into a regular feature of the establishment, and a specific tourism resource for Jimena, which badly needs it. See you there tomorrow!

Jimena artist to hold exhibition in San Roque
Juan Soler, who lives in Jimena and works all over the place, has been invited to hold an exhibition of his paintings at the Sala Joven Rooms at the Diego Salinas Building in San Roque (right next to the new Town Hall, sightly downhill from the main square). Titled Las pieles del poeta (The Poet's Skins), the exhibition will be inaugurated on Tuesday November 2 and remain open until the 12th. Born in La Línea de la Concepción in 1966, Juan Antonio Soler is a painter, sculptor, writer, graphic designer and photographer, among a lot of other things. Please see more about Juan Soler on JimenArte, one of our partner sites.
Ready for an art exhibition?
There is a persistent rumour in the artistic circles of Jimena that the bell tower in the main square, (photo) Plaza de la Consitución though better known as El Paseo, is being considered as a place to hold an upcoming art exhibition - or is being prepared for one, depending on who you listen to. It will obviously need much cleaning if an exhibition is intended for the inside, but it seems to us to be a wonderful idea: couldn't be more central, plenty (?) of parking, unusual, etc. We will be asking at the Town Hall but in the meantime, does anyone know anything about it?

Reflections of Jimena
Gonzalo Polo is an artist. A painter, sculptor, photographer, web designer - a creative talent, in other words, who is 'just passing through' the village, though he seems to have been here for a while. He has kindly sent us a series of photos he has placed on Facebook that he describes as follows: Jimena vista a través de sus reflejos, reflejos que a veces se doblan, reflejos que se invierten...sólo reflejos...y más reflejos. Nada es verdad...todo es mentira. Jimena seen through its reflections, reflections that are sometimes doubled, reflections that are inverted...only reflections...and more reflections. Nothing is true ... everything's a lie. (Please send in any photos you think we'd like to put up here, preferably of where you live or have visited, with a little description of the place and of yourself - or send us a link to your pictures.)

Starting in October and running through November and December, the 12-week course is to be held on Saturdays from 10.30 to 12 noon at the Reina Sofía Cultural Centre in Estación (or Los Ángeles). Rod, who has lived in Jimena since 2001, is both painter and sculptor and has worked in a variety of art fields, from fine art to contemporary three-dimensional design. His studio down by the Hozgarganta river is where he has been working since arriving in Jimena after a lifetime of travel and teaching. (See other local artists on our partner site JimenArte.)

Henrietta's begins its artistic career
Henrietta's, the palatial hotel (officially an hospedería) in the centre of Jimena and run by artist Melissa González-Morgan, today announced its first (we hope of many) art courses. This one, titled 'Realism Painting' is scheduled for October 25 to 30 and will be run by well-known Córodoba art historian and painter Fernando Martínez Romero. The course covers traditional techniques (glazes in oil and egg tempera ) of 15th century Flemish painting of skin tones and portraits, takes five hours per day in the studio and will end with an exhibition of students' work. Places are limited and a lot of interest is already being shown, so we advise the interested to get in touch with Henrietta's (click on image for full contact information). (This item also appears on CampoPulse)
