Los Barrios is closed tomorrow

LOS BARRIOS Well, not exactly. It just happens to be the municipality's Patron Saint Day, in honour of San Isidro Labrador. This means that all municipal offices and a lot more besides, are closed. So don't plan to do any shopping at the likes of Carrefour, Mercadona, Decathlon, MediaMarkt, etc. etc. in the Palmones area shopping centres, including all those little shops behind the larger ones. Chances are the cinemas will be open but very little else. This, of course, does not apply to other places outside the municipality.

Updating Plan Renove discounts on white goods

Save on renewing your white goods
As we said over the weekend (Update your white goods...), Plan Renove is back again, with a total Andalucía-wide budget of €16.5 million. The idea is to help us exchange our white goods to newer, more energy-efficient ones. The plan began last week and is expected to last until all the money is gone. It is possible to get discounts of up to about €600, depending on the items you choose. There are several requirements, simple to apply, that we are pleased to offer you below:>>>

Friday market moved to this Thursday

(Press release) The traditional Friday market has been moved to tomorrow, Thursday, because of Good Friday. No, this is not an April Fool joke, that's on December 28 in Spain. It is to be held at the usual place but there is no news as to whether the Estación market, usually on Thursdays, is to run concurrently or not.

What's closed, what's open?

As far as we can ascertain, schedules for this weekend in general are as follows: Banks, post offices, public offices are closed April 1, 2, 3 and 4. Food shops, open on Thursday, April 1, and Saturday 3, half day only, though some may open all day on Saturday. Other shops follow their commercial instincts: you may well find the smaller village groceries opening on Thursday and Friday morning. Saturday is not a bank holiday.

The Corner Shop opens in Jimena

The Corner Shop, across the street from the primary school, opened for business yesterday. It contains all sorts of possibilities, from real estate services (by Jimena Real Estate) to website design (by Marta Fuster), from translation services (by The Translation People) to repair work (by Alex Goodall), and from local arts & crafts and Christmas gifts (yes, already!) to postcards and pictures (by Michaela), not to mention fresh produce. The Corner Shop offers an interesting and varied collection of services - and can even sell you refreshment on a hot day! Worth popping in on your way to the Friday market or the Post Office.

Shopping in the recession - watch out!

(By Anna Breeker. Photo by blogs.diariosur.es) I hardly ever shop at night, but last Saturday I had to go to the supermarket. In the evening, it was not particularly busy. I picked up a few items and put them in my trolley, then I wandered to the next isle looking for a specific ingredient. When I came back to where I thought the trolley was, I could not find it. Thinking that I am a bit of a scatterbrain lately, I walked around the isles again, but no sign of it.>
