Oba to hold a concert to benefit La Estrella

JIMENA The local charity that helps the handicapped (and JimenaPulse's favourite) is to benefit from a concert by Oba, a local band (not the bar & more!) that came together in the 1980s. The idea is to raise funds for La Estrella's summer activities for the kids. The concert is on Saturday, June 2, from 10pm at the Iglesia de la Victoria. Tickets are €5 at the door, and additional donations are accepted. The band Oba (the name is that given to Jimena by the Romans) is made up of several members who look a lot older than in the poster illustrating this item, which is not surprising because they are. You will recognize several of them as people whom you see every day. In any case, La Estrella is hoping for a good turnout because they need the community's support.

Skeptics in the Pub meeting this Saturday

(From Simon via e-mail) "Your readers might be interested know that the inaugural Andalucía Skeptics in the Pub meeting will be held at Bar Oba this Saturday 5th May at 7 p.m. All those interested in rational discourse are welcome." Indeed we were - but then we saw the website linked above, which says it's for for all those interested in science, history, psychology, philosophy, investigative journalism and how to examine extraordinary claims of all types. Wild! Might actually turn up... See you there?

Easter Roast at Oba

Simon and Iris tell us they're preparing a Special Roast Dinner for Easter Sunday that includes a choice of roast turkey or lamb with all the trimmings. There's also a choice of 2 courses at €12.50 or 3 courses at €15.00. Lunch is scheduled between 1.30 and 4pm - but please make your reservation at the bar or calling 665 353 717.

Chinese Night at the Oba

JIMENA A gleat menu for a gleat Chinese Night at Oba Bar & More. It's on Saturday, March 24 (this next one, people!) from 8pm onwards. The price is excellent at €15 per person (See the full three-course menu below) but Simon would like us to pre-purchase tickets at the bar in good time - not an unreasonable request when they have to go all the way to the Gleat Wall to buy the ingredients! Enjoy!

A weekend of things to do at Oba Bar & More: Open Mic Night this Friday at 8.30 and Thrifty Malone on Saturday at  8.30 - Buffet as well (€5, please buy ticket in advance from the bar) but why not watch Italy v England in the 6 Nations beforehand at 5 o'clock?

Oba Bar & More's charity collections

Simon and Iris, of Bar Oba, announce that they have collected the following amounts to be handed over to their respective charities: Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2011: €115,55; and ADANA (Abandoned Animals) €185.00. Congrats to all who contributed, and for the effort of collecting!

JIMENA Strange things were seen at the Christmas Fayre yesterday. We were only there for a few minutes as this is a busy weekend, but long enough to see familiar faces, and others not so familiar. A good selection of items but not a lot of space - wonder what happened as the crowds crowded in? We are also reliably informed that the karaoke night went down a storm, which may or may not have anything to do with the rain that came down in the night. Hope everyone enjoyed it. (We're off to yet another Christmas do up the street, today.)

If you scroll down a bit you will see an item titled Christmas Fayre at Oba - announcing, you got it! But what we heard about this morning, and have only now been able to put it up, is that on that same evening, i.e. Saturday starting at 9pm, Simon and Iris will be hosting a Karaoke Night as well. (We hope they/you/we can get some rest in between...) Still, it'll be a great fun evening. (Prospero Note: There are so many things going on right now, please be sure to let us know if you have something you want to tell us about.)

This one is at Oba Bar & More on Saturday, December 10 from 11 am (after you've picked up your order from the Saturday Market at our offices - see sidebar). Your friend and ours may well greet you at Oba's door this coming Saturday! Why? Because that's when they're having a Mexican Night. For only €15 p/p, and a complimentary tequila on arrival (possibly served by our friend Speedy here), you weel enshoy a a fantastico evening of Mejicano delights. Kool kurry knight was a grand sukcess at Oba

The 'no tables available' sign outside the door went up just after opening time. All the tables had been booked. The kitchen was a little worried that there wouldn't be enough for all, but there certainly was. The kool kurries and great desserts finished, some kool people lingered on around their tables. Others headed for the bar, like our four ladies in the picture, who shall remain nameless. Simon tells us that they plan such events every month, with different themes and subjects - but we knew that since the notices come up here. Kool kurry knight kuming up at Oba

Let's rephrase that, as Simon and Iris asked us to put up here: Kool Down with a curry! That's better. But wot's it all about, we hear you ask. On Saturday evening, August 27, they are offering a splendid curry meal (yeah, you guessed it) for a mere €10 a head, though only with a pre-booked ticket. The normal sweet menu and vegetarian options are available as well, but you can see the curry menu below - and it's worth seeing!>>>

Jamie returns again!

Jamie Chiappe, who was in Jimena in February, is coming back for another gig at Oba this coming Friday, May 14, from 9.30 'til late. Gibraltar-born Chiappe lives in Estepona, speaks and sings in English and Spanish and hjas been such a great success each time he has performed in Jimena that he is back by popular acclaim. This is yet another of Simon and Iris's many activities and events at their spot just up from the village's main square.

No, hang on, let's re-phrase that: The Royal Wedding has moved Jimena. Better yet: The Brits in Jimena are moved by the Royal Wedding. Okay. The Brits in Jimena (and any other interested nationality) can watch the whole proceedings from 11am at the Bar Oba. They can also get a €5 buffet lunch (buy in advance) from 2pm.
