Happy Father's Day, José! ¡Viva La Pepa!

Friday was ... we forget what. Saturday was St. Patrick's, yesterday was Mothering Sunday (in the UK) and today is San José, which makes it Father's Day in Spain and, this year, the 200th anniversary of the 1812 Constitution signed in Cádiz (and about which more later on), known as La Pepa (Pepa is short for Josefa, the feminine version of José - don't ask). If you think we were going to spend all weekend writing about, or had time to do so before, you'd be wrong, so get over it. (We'll tell you what we were doing, though.)

Title: WALKING ALONG THE RIVER
(Picture missing, will try to find it!) Along the Hozgarganta River, on the village side, is a footpath that was probably created originally by the Romans, who carved their way into the limestone rock (see picture). Later, in the XVII Century, a foundry mill (known today as La Fábrica de Bombas, The Bomb Factory) was built at great effort and expense, near the present bridge at Pasada de Alcalá. However, due to miscalculations about water levels in the summer (there ain't none), it only functioned for eleven years and was abandoned in favour of another similar mill near today's San Pablo. Given that this is our anniversary month, we will be putting up some of our old articles, and stats, and other bits and pieces - always supposing we have the time between trying to earn a living. Our railway station is 120 years old

The railway station at Jimena is 120 years old this year. As we announced here, celebrations for this significant event in the history of Jimena are taking place this Satruday. The Algeciras-Ronda railway was built by British engineers as an R&R facility for troops stationed in Gibraltar. It is still one of the most attractive train rides in Spain, especially in the Spring when the wild flowers are out. Several of the stations on the line have been transformed into restaurants, which make the ride a great day out. You can see a history of one of the hotels built for the purpose in the 3rd edition of our DominGo magazine (which may be revived next year if there's financing).

50 years of "Yaba Daba Doooo!"

Yes the Flinstones were 50 years old this week. Hanna and Barbera's creation originally from September 30, 1960 to April 1, 1966 on ABC, in the US. And everywhere else ever since. You still see episodes on cable and kids' channels. Long may Fred and Wilma be around. The creativity of the show was/is an example to all. See more about them on Wikipedia.
