A phone call this afternoon from someone who walks her dog in the campo several times a day alerted us to the presence of more snakes in the vicinity than usual. In fact, she, not known for exaggeration, reported one "as thick as her fist and about six feet long," which would be extremely unusual and might be an escaped pet. Our intrepid Prospero headed out to the area reported -close to the Cruz Blanca, on the way out of the village towards the campsite- and he came up with this photo of a much smaller one ("And a bleeding wonder it isn't blurred!" he says). Sources in the know attribute this, the snakes, to a very wet winter and sudden heat and dry weather. Although there are no poisonous indigenous snakes in this area, there are vipers, and it's as well to keep an eye open if walking in the campo or on the road, where the photo was taken.

I too have seen more snakes than normal, mostly dead on the roads, big and small, also sadly my friend's cat got killed by a snake recently.
