Neither Spain/Portugal nor Britain but Russia

The 2018 World Cup went to Russia in Zürich this afternoon. FIFA President Sepp Blatter announced the winner shortly after 16.35 (Spanish time), but a couple of minutes before that, before the official announcement, a Spanish radio had already announced the winner, which was confirmed by a Press Association release very shortly after that. The two losers, Britain and joint bidders Spain & Portugal, had to accept defeat despite their consumate efforts and presentations to the FIFA Executive Council, some members of which, unless you've been on another planet this week, is under a cloud of suspicion of corruption. The 2022 Cup, also in contention this year, went to Qatar.
