The municipal council of Jimena will gain four councillors for the local elections scheduled for May 2011 if the town register is ratified to have 10,000 inhabitants or more by the end of this year. It will have 17 councillors instead of the present 13. The current padrón (register) dates to January 1, 2009, with 10,431 inhabitants and there has been an increase since then, which is expected to be confirmed in four months' time. The Electoral Law sets the number of councillors according to the population, established in groupings of 250, 1.000, 2.000, 5.000, 10.000, 20.000, 50.000, 100.000 and 300.000 residents. In the Campo area, Los Barrios gained four councillors in the 2007 elections (from 17 to 21), for instance, while the province showed a similar increase in El Bosque. On the other hand El Gastor lost two councillors in 1999 when population there went under 2000.
