'El Gordo' could be thinner this year: strike threatened
Sellers of Lotería Nacional (National Lottery), which promotes El Gordo, the largest prize in Europe at this time of year, are threatening to go on strike just before the Christmas prizes are drawn on November 22. Some 600 of them held a demonstration in Madrid yesterday against what they call "the privatization of public gaming." A new law says that as from January 1, 2010, they will have to choose between staying as they are, or 'going private', into which any new Administración de Lotería (ticket sales office) will automatically be placed from then on. (Note: the Lotería Nacional should not be confused with the ONCE tickets, which are usually sold by the handicapped.)
