(Photo: Europa Sur) Residents of Puente Mayorga, part of the municipality of San Roque and close to many of the factories and oil processing plants there, were astonished when the sky suddenly showered them with oil, as well they might. It turns out that one of the machines that is being used to cut away the reinforced concrete on a chimney being demolished at the Enel Viesgo power station blew a gasket, spewing some 300 litres of hydraulic oil into the air on Saturday evening. The stuff covered vehicles, streets, parks and people sitting out in the fresh air. Firefighters were called out and, together with municipal workers, cleaned as much as possible until about 2.30am. Municipal authorities have taken samples of the spillage to test for toxicity, while environmental pressure groups have said that hydraulic oil does contain toxic material.
