You may remember Grace (Grace needs a loving home and plenty of food). She featured in one of our many appeals. She was lucky, she was fostered and ended up staying with her foster family. Her progress is almost unbelievable and it makes us extremely happy that she is so very well. Alas, there are still lots of animals all over the place that need help - there was also talk of setting up at least a fund-raising entity in Jimena but that seems to have fizzled out when it was evident that Prospero was not about to run it, though he did offer to help with setting it up, and Spanish appeals, etc. More AFTER photos below>>>

Police will not deal with this abandoned dog

JIMENA This unfortunate dog has been hanging around the Correos - Ruiz Galán area for almost a month. It is full of mange (photo shows it rubbing up against a wall) and has become very defensive, difficult to catch. The Local Police have been advised several times by different residents, to no avail (one time, we were told that the Council hadn't paid the dog catcher for so long, they could no longer be called). The dog was once part of a hunting pack, but it got ill and so it was abandoned - nothing new with the hunters there; they are a menace to dogs.

Brussels criticizes Spain for treatment of animals

SPAIN (Agencies) The treatment given animals in Spain is worrying the European Commission. It therefore initiated proceedings yesterday on the treatment given animals at abbatoirs and threatened Spain with fines for those who live in zoos. As to the latter, the fines could be into the millions becausethe country ostensibly does not meet European regulations about the care of the animals nor on authorization for the zoos themselves. Spain was already fined because those zoo regulations were not being met in several regions (Aragón, Asturias, Balears, Canarias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Extremadura and Galicia) and proof has not yet been received that the proper "authorization is being issued, nor that the zoos that did not meet the required standards had been closed," according to an EU communiqué published yesterday. Recently, there have been demostrations all over Spain against animal cruelty, which followed a report issued by a pressure group called Igualdad Animal (Animal Equality) in which several zoos, including those of Jerez and Castellar (above), were condemned for the quality of care and space. Igualdad Animal demanded the closure of the zoos in their report because the animals suffer at "physical and psychological level, their facilities do not meet their needs, there is nowhere for them to look for food and there is no live vegetation nearby. We have chosen to show the Castellar zoo documentary because it is in the Campo de Gibraltar. However, zoos all over the country were included in it.

These are just some of the dogs looking for a home. Cats aren't even featured, let alone horses, mules or donkeys...

EDITORIAL You saw our feature about seven puppies and their mother found by the side of the road, didn't you? The Spanish media is full of reports from all over the country about abandoned pets - mostly owing to la crisis, apparently, although it has been going for many, many years. But this site is dedicated principally to the Campo de Gibraltar and because I live in Jimena, I choose to use my village as a microcosm, an example of what is going on beyond its municipal frontiers.>>>

Seven puppies and their mother abandoned on roadside - PLEASE HELP!

5 Boys and 2 Girls, left to die along with mum on the side of the road near Jimena, desperately looking for homes. Roughly about 4 weeks old... will not be big dogs, good size for house dogs. They will be put to sleep if people don't want them. Looking for possible foster homes, too, until permanent homes are found. Please, please help if you can. Call Renate on 672 072 616

DESPERATE FOR A HOME!

Yes, they have all come into JimenaPulse, either by e-mail or in person (dogson?). In all cases they were dumped at the door or on the property of a foreign, usually British, person, in the knowledge that they would be taken care of. We're not sure if we're doing the right thing: are we encouraging the dumping of these animals by taking them, feeding them and trying to find homes for them? Should we -could we- leave them where they are? Let them die, and maybe, just maybe, the totally uncivilized, ill-educated, irresponsible people who don't know what having a pet means would have the mothers & fathers 'done', so this continuous tragedy would come to an end. If you have, or know of, any abandoned animal, please get a photo or two and send them in with some contact details. We will put them up here and on CampoPulse. HELP US FIND A NEW HOME - WE WERE JUST DUMPED HERE!

In another Home-Finding issue, we received this by e-mail on May 17 from our friend Alex Odell but publish it late because of connectivity issues yesterday, so we don't know if these poor little things have found a home yet or not. In any case, these two dogs were found on a street in Calle Consuelo, outside Cindy's house. They are very gentle and used to people, so are probably house trained. Can you help find a home for them? If so, let us know and we'll do the rest (if we can find Alex!)

Is this any way to keep an animal?

When will the Local Police and authorities take this kind of thing seriously? A reader has sent us these photos (more below) with the comment, "We have 3 dogs living in a makeshift kennel in the lane behind us. Their accommodation is very very basic and they are there 24 / 7 days a week without exercise and are in temperatures ranging from 40º in the summer to 4º lately; apart from all the rain we have endured over the past weeks. They bark constantly during the day, evening and night, not the sign of happy, cared for animals". Further enquiries reveal that the dogs are behind a house on Plaza Llano de la Victoria, on the dirt road that runs parallel with Corral del Concejo. The 'kennel' is probably located behind No 21 or 23 Plaza Llano de la Victoria but we could not be sure.>
