Her progress is almost unbelievable and it makes us extremely happy that she is so very well. Alas, there are still lots of animals all over the place that need help - there was also talk of setting up at least a fund-raising entity in Jimena but that seems to have fizzled out when it was evident that Prospero was not about to run it, though he did offer to help with setting it up, and Spanish appeals, etc. More AFTER photos below>>>

Day after day, evening after evening, night after night, the usual idiots were determined to destroy the exercise machines by the steps up to the pensioners' day centre. Despite some vigilance on my part and apparently none from any authorities -my own recriminations elicit nothing more than aggression and even danger- there they have been and, finally, they managed to destroy one of the machines. One down, several more to go.

Burns Night is open to Sassenachs

JIMENA Burns Night is to be celebrated at Oba Bar & More on Friday, January 27th (although Robert Burns's birthday is on the 25th, it being a Wednesday) from 8pm onwards. The haggis will be addressed at 8.30, we're told (and had to look it up, being utter, hopeless Sassenachs here, and were delighted with Wikipedia yet again). The meal includes Haggis, Neaps and Tatties, we're also told (pssst, wot's a neap?), and the announcement says that even Sassenachas are welcome (well, given that there are only about four true Scots in the village (right?) that's not surprising). (Note: with Jan's help, we started trying to explain the whole thing to locals in Spanish but gave up the task as impossible. Can anyone help?)

CASTELLAR The zoo in Castellar has a new member. She was presented to society in general and the media in particular on Friday at a press conference at the Holiday Inn Express in Los Barrios, where she was shown to everyone and where a chat was given about the kind of care she needs, etc. The daughter of Rahin and Tronca, the little nameless 'kitten' is the result of a lot of work with her parents, both of whom were rescued, one from a private home, the other from a circus. She has no name as yet, but the zoo, which houses some 500 animals of all kinds of species, is using Facebook to find a name for her (although I can't find any reference to it there...)

SPAIN (Agencies) The country went up in arms in 2008 when the power companies were allowed to bill monthly, with meters being read every other month - and thus causing enormous confusion about 'estimated' bills in between. Now the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism is planning to allow consumers to pay 'only for what they use' (their words, not ours!). The project is in the hands of the National Energy Commission for review. Included in it is the possibility that some consumers might want things to stay as they are, in other words, a reading every other month but monthly bills. What's more, the project also includes the possibility of consumers providing their own reading from their own meters - which used to happen if the meter reader was unable to access the meter. The ministry explained that there had been a 'significant increase in the number of complaints' about estimated bills. New dates: from Feb 24 to 26

JIMENA (TioJimeno) The local carnival groups have asked Councillor for Festivities, Cristóbal Lirios, to bring forward the dates during which Jimena celebrates its Carnival (see previous item here, including the dates for other villages in the municipality). Just for a laugh, see Prospero making a fool of himself. If you want an explanation of what carnival is in these parts, check the items below, which is merely a glossary of terms you will find in the carnival programme when we get it.>>>
Glossary: There are no words in English for chirigota, comparsa or similar Carnaval terminology. Not when the word cuarteto (nominally quartet) can mean a singing and dancing group of anywhere between two and we don't know how many. No, if you really want to understand it, next time make sure you’re born in the province of Cádiz, preferably in the capital.

Libreto: The word should have another 't' in English, but this is a very Spanish Carnival. You will be offered a booklet with the words to all the songs of the group you will be supporting with the purchase of the aforesaid libreto. It is advisable -and the kind thing to do- to buy all the libretos you're offered, as the money goes toward the considerable expenses involved in preparing it all. It is also a good way to understand (at least some of) the words from the songs.

TioJimeno: our good friends at TioJimeno cover Carnival much better than we ever could (one reason is there's more of them, another is that they all have proper jobs and don't rely on donations like we do.) Also, they are very keen carnavaleros.

Another 10% to remain under threat of demolition

ANDALUCÍA (Agencies) Nine out of ten constructions, be they individual homes or within an urbanization, that were constructed on what is called suelo no urbanizable, or restricted land, will be able to obtain property rights for their owners, after a decree was approved last week by the Junta de Andalucía's Government Council. The rest will be demolished unless otherwise instructed by a Court of Law. The announcement by the Junta's Councillor for Housing, Josefina Cruz Villalón, confirms what had previously been mentioned by the President of the Junta, José Antonio Griñán, during the State of the Region debate last June. In fact, there is no register of otherwise 'illegal' construction, except as listed in reports such as those carried out in the Axarquía region of Málaga, for example. So, with the help of aerial photography, the Junta has calculated that about 10% of the 250,000 'illegal' buildings can be made fully legal. Another 80% will not be officially 'legalized' but will have their circumstances approved so that they can legally obtain basic services such as water, power, etc.. The remaining 10% will not get any kind of approval or legalization and will be scheduled for demolition, unless otherwise directed by a court.>>>

The reason for the situation of these last is that they have been built on fully protected land, so the applicable town planning laws have not prescribed. They are mostly built on areas of 'natural risk', such as on river beds, flood plains and other such. Many of them are also under judicial procedures in any case.

Indeed, many of the supposedly 'illegal' urbanizations have already been 'regularized' (good Spanglish word, that!) as each council puts into effect its new planning regulations.

Nevertheless, the decree makes a distinction among those properties that will get their licencia de primera ocupación (licence of first occupation) as long as they meet the current building regulations -whether or not they have planning permission- and those that do not meet these current standards but met regulations current at the time of building, as well as all those built before 1975 (if these are not in a declared state of ruin). The latter are pretty scarce, according to Junta sources, who says that most illegal building was carried out in the 1980s and 90s.

A licencia de primera ocupación is the document that allows the property to be inscribed at the Property Registry, which in turn will permit the utility companies to connect to their supply.

The legal term that applies to 80% of these 'recognized' properties -a way round various laws- is asimiladas afuera de ordenación (assimilation out of town planning ordinance), which, while not obtaining a licencia de primera ocupación, they will nevertheless be allowed to remain as they are and get their utilities up to date. The procedure is in the hands of the local town hall, which will have to decide which buildings in the municipality get such 'recognition'.

Josefina Cruz pointed out that the decree is not aimed at getting properties legalized indiscriminately, but "a response according to need", adding that it is an "exercise in reality" that intends to sort out construction that is in a legal quandary: they are illegal but the 'crime' has prescribed.

The Councillor also said that the 'legalization' procedure sends out a message of 'wiping the slate clean' but that in future will not be so obliging, and that the cost of obtaining 'legalization' "will be borne by the proprietor", not the public purse.

"Legal instruments and taxes can now be established so that basic services and utilities, and urbanization costs, can be charged to the individual owners or renters and not to all the members of a community," said Cruz Villalón. "Many of these homes are paying Council Taxes (Impuesto de Bienes Inmuebles, or IBI) even though they are illegal."

The decree is not a finality in itself, said the Councillor, but a way for the results of years of illegal building to be recognized as existing; they cannot be demolished and they can't be legalized.

JIMENA An interested reader, Andrés Rebolledo Barreno, sent these photos to TioJimeno (see the web album here) to denounce what he considers a crime against the environment that took place in the area known as Viña Rodrigo. You are not allowed to chop down cork oaks without considerable hassle. Among other things, Andrés says that this whole thing 'smells vary badly' because it is neither part of the original plan, nor have any permits or licenses been obtained. The significant number of trees that were chopped down during the Christmas holidays, when presumably the authorities 'were on holiday'. It all points to governmental negligence, he adds. And, Andrés also says that he is saddened by the reaction -or rather, the non-reaction- of the people of Estación and Jimena in general, who have shown 'indifference and apathy' about such a crime.

Jimena, the only area municipality to be exempt from Council Tax increase

IBI is now the main source of municipal finance as a dramatic downturn in new building throughout the country, so town halls everywhere are suffering from a lack of income from building licences and urban projects. But the decree does not apply to every municipality, nor even to every cadastral unit. Application of the decree will range from the complete exemption for Jimena to an increase for all urban buildings in Los Barrios and La Línea. that they raised their taxes between 2005 and 2007, at the top of the market.

It is expected that the rise will be about 10% for Los Barrios and La Línea (their valuations, or cadastral value -valor catastral- was revised before 2002) and Castellar, Algeciras, San Roque, and Tarifa's are calculated at 4% (revised between 2008 and 2011). There are no area municipalities that have to apply a 6% rise, which concerns only those whose revisions were carried out between 2002 and 2004.

In general terms, the increases will be applied to the top 50% residential buildings in terms of their revised valuation. However, increases will be applied everywhere (except Jimena), to other urban buildings such as garages, commercial properties and other uses, independent of their cadastral value.

Nevertheless, the percentages mentioned above apply only to the cadastral value, not necessarily to the bills themselves. As you know, IBI is calculated on the basis of a property's cadastral value, not on its last purchase or sale price, and therefore not on its actual market value. It is the job of the provincial government, Diputación Provincial, to collect the monies in the name of most of the area's councils. (This is a highly politicized thing that we don't need to go into here.)

Spanish conversation classes

The Three Kings arrive in Jimena

The Three Wise Men, or Kings, or whatever - you know, the frankincense and myrrh guys - arrived in Jimena yesterday evening. I)t's agood thing the kids had told them about Jimena earlier in the day (see it here) They paraded through the main village, went to San Pablo and then to Estación (if you encountered mounds of camel dung on your way to work this morning, it's their fault entirely). In any case, our good friends at TioJimeno were there for the event, particularly at their arrival at the live Nativity scene they put up every year in Estación. There they were, all the kids with their tin cans on lengths of string - and lots of very clever and imaginative efforts that required more than just tying cans to string. Municipalities look to fines as cash cows

JEREZ The municipality of Jerez has just given notice that it is prepared to lower costs without lowering income. One of the ways it is proposing to do this particular bit of financial gymnastics is via fines. Although the report mentions only traffic fines, we would bet on them and every other municipality in deep doo-doo, finding a way of fining us for everything from painting a tiny spot on the house without a licence to following one as we walk the dog (did he pick it up?). In other words -and we are getting increasingly cynical- we are warned. Needless to say, there are other moves from the Government after today's Cabinet meeting (held usually on Friday but tom tomorrow's a national holiday).

Tomorrow: 'dragging the cans'

One of the traditions in Jimena (and other places) is the arrastre de latas, which translates approximately to 'dragging the cans'. The idea is to make sure The Three Kings (Reyes) become aware that in this little village there are a whole lot of children waiting for presents from them. This year's is the eighth edition of a continuous event that in fact was commonplace many years ago here and elsewhere. If you take your child (they're usually over it by age ten) be sure to tie some tin cans on a long piece of string or they will feel left out. Here are some samples of the kind of thing we mean, from a slide show from 2009 - it's fun and very noisy! Oh, and it all starts at 11am from Llano de la Victoria and 'parades' down to the main square, El Paseo. See you there!

Flamenco show presented in Jimena to tour America

El Indiano in Jimena, 2008

LA LÍNEA David Morales, the Flamenco dancer of La Línea who now also offers classes at the Instituto Cervantes in Gibraltar, presented a show called El Indiano at the 2008 International Music Festival of Jimena. It was a great success there and everywhere it went. The show brings the rhythms and sounds of South America (e.g. vidalitas, colombianas, tangos and milongas, to name but very few) and joins them with flamenco, not so much in 'fusion' but in a'there and back' format that is difficult to explain but certainly worth seeing. However, you will have to make a trip to South America towards the end of May in order to do so. Morales is taking El Indiano first to Buenos Aires and other large cities of Argentina, then on to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil - all places the show has been on stage but which are demanding more. This time he will be offering a fresh show to which he has added and taken out pieces under the same concept. Before that, though, he has a date at the Falla Theatre in Cádiz on May 12th, to take part in the Iberian American Festival there. Good friend that he is to Jimena (and to this writer), we wish him the best of luck.

Are you wearing red knickers?

What? Yes, hadn't you noticed all the selections of red underwear -male and female- that abounds at this time of year? They're sure to have some at the Chinese shops if you forgot to buy any for tonight. But why? One of the least evident traditions for New Year's Eve in Spain -one of many - requires that you wear red underwear to meet the New Year. It apparently gives you luck in finding a partner (it doesn't specify whether permanent or temporary). Until quite recently, if you wore yellow underwear, all you got was luck. We have been unable to find out where or when this tradition began, but if it has anything to do with cunning marketing, like the eating of the 12 grapes at midnight (see below), we wouldn't be at all surprised. But this is not the only 'good-luck traditional ritual' (i.e. superstitions), here are some more, including some pretty strange ones:>>>The 12 grapes at midnight. This is supposed to bring good luck and your wishes come true if you manage to eat them as the twelve chimes go off, and, of course, you enumerate each of your twelve wishes. The 'tradition' was started in the 1920s by a canny salesman who had a bumper crop of grapes that year. You can now buy little tins with exactly twelve peeled and seeded grapes in an outrageously sweet syrup.

Money. One way of making sure you get money throughout the year is to count money at exactly midnight - this, naturally, is to be carried out as you stuff your mouth with grapes in time to the chimes. There are those who go for putting money in shoes for the same purpose (be careful, do not switch the coins for grapes!).

Lentils. Eating a spoonful of lentils supposedly brings fortune and prosperity. Or giving a handful of them to a business friend, acquaintance or partner will no doubt make for good business in the coming year. There is no indication as to whether the lentils should be cooked or not - or about the consequences of eating too many of them

Luggage. Coming and going out of the house with luggage guarantees many journeys. Or putting luggage outside the front door after midnight. (Be sure it contains all the needs of whatever the person you are throwing out at the time).

Marriage. Sitting and standing at each of the twelve chimes ensures marriage. Do not sit on the grapes nor drop the wad of money you're counting.

Love. Take a photo of the one you love, tie it with a red ribbon and sleep on it under your pillow tonight. Your love will be returned.

Bad luck. On a piece of paper write down all the bad things that have happened to you this past year, and burn it. You are burning your past (though there may be those who don't think you can...).

Getting rid of the negative. Throw a glass of water out the front door, to be rid of tears and sadness.

Happiness. At each chime, repeat "I will be happy this year" Try not to spit out any grapes.

Stones. Many homes select three stones and place them prominently in the house. They represent health, love and money. Do not confuse them with grapes: dentistry is expensive.

Candles. Blue attract peace; yellow, abundance; red, passion (see?); green, health; white, clarity; and orange, intelligence, though we don't know whose.

New clothes. Wear new clothes on New Year's Day and you will be able to buy lots of new lothes the rest of the year. Applies principally to the fashion conscious.

Clean house. Your house must be clean, clean, clean tonight, even if you're not seeing in the New Year there. Clean everything, but pay special attention to the corners. Get rid of anything that is broken, useless or unpleasant. You must also place cinnamon and sweet smelling things in various places; the first attracts good luck and the second, love. (Says Prospero: No bleeding wonder!)

There isn't one, much. The dictionary defines them as follows: factura = bill, invoice; recibo = bill, account (eg recibo de la luz = electricity bill). In fact, the word recibo means receipt, so it could be said that you would get one when the bill has been paid. But no, because this all comes from a bureaucratic past (and present) when there was no direct debit. It was simple: you got a factura, you paid it (at the bank, town hall or wherever, in cash) and you were given a recibo. Would that it had stayed as simple... Municipal Secretaries, Auditors and Treasurers 'under great pressure'

CÁDIZ Province/ LOS BARRIOS The Municipal Town Clerks, Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers of the province are under very great pressure, according to their Official College. They even use the word acoso, or harassment. This, they say, is from a good number of municipalities in the province, not only from the governing councillors but also from members of the opposition and even from some unions. (Remember that there have been some very deep changes in the politics of almost all the municipalities of Cádiz, as well as in the provincial authority, Diputación). The latest case - but certainly not the only one - comes from Los Barrios, where>>>
the General Secretary in the Town Hall, who has not been paid for four months, like the rest of the municipal employees, received a note from the union representing some of the employees demanding that she not issue a report that validated a proposal by the Council, which is part of her job to do. "We will not consent any kind of pressure on any General Secretary in any municipality," says the College. "We will take court action against anybody intending to manipulate the rectitude or integrity of the Secretary, who is subject exclusively to applying the law." The College says that there are innumerable such cases throughout the province, much of it caused by the local elections (and the need to show a 'positive image', we say) and the financial crisis (for the same reason?). Only last year (2010) in Jimena, the Secretary left because she was submitted to so much pressure - but poor Cristina Barrera ended up working for another area municipality where the pressures may be even greater.

King's Christmas address - reactions

MADRID His Majesty King Juan Carlos gave his traditional Christmas speech at 9pm on Christmas Eve (which is when most Spaniards are sitting at the table for their celebration). It was watched by 7.16 million people, according to the ratings. Most of the reactions by politicians and the media refer to the fact that the speech included a reference to the Royal Household's problems with the King's son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarín, who is being investigated for 'deviating public funds' and has been 'demoted' from Royal appearances and found a job in the US. Practically the only criticism of the speech is that there was too little reference to the fact that the terrorist group ETA says it has abandoned 'violence'. There was, certainly, much referring to the economy and how 'we must all pull together in the same direction' (not HM's words, just our conclusion).

Free ice skating in exchange for food

ALGECIRAS Kids in Algeciras will be able to enjoy some ice skating next week, on Tuesday 27, at the rink that is being installed at the Bahía de Algeciras Commercial Centre (El Corte Inglés) - if they bring some non-perishable food that will be given to Cáritas, the Church charity that will distribute it. The idea sprung from the owner of the attraction, Manuel Cañadillas, with the cooperation of the Council's Social Welfare department. As from 11 am, the children can come and skate for free providing they bring the food. Cañadillas told us that the idea was to 'start children on the road to solidarity' from when they are very young.

How to choose your jamón this Christmas

We choose to use the Spanish word for ham to avoid any possible confusion. Not that there can be much confusion about the taste. For the most part, foreigners use the words jamón serrano to mean what amounts to a large variety of, literally, 'mountain ham'. This is the variety one usually gets in a tapa in a bar. But there are three factors that determine not only the quality, but also the taste and, especially, the price. Finding the right one, or one that is best value for money, is about as easy as winning El Gordo lottery. In this item we will be using some denominations that even the Spaniards are confused about, but since prices can vary from €18 a kilo to €750 (paid in Japan in October), it's probably a good idea to get some knowledge on the subject. But, as we said in another item on this delicious subject (Let's Ham it Up, JimenaPulse, June 2007), it all starts with the pig.>>>

If the Iberian pig - hence the name ibérico for a whole lot of pork products including jamón - is fed in the wild, the result is immeasurably better; the cheaper types are not. The expression pata negra (black foot, or trotter) comes from the colour of, yes, the trotter. If it is black, the breed is pure, if not, it has been 'domesticated' with other breeds. But then, you could come across the picaresca española (Spanish picaresque, or guile) whereby the trotter is painted black, or boot polished. At this time of year, beware of someone coming to your door selling a pata negra at a ridiculously low price: it is either stolen, or polished.

In essence, the look, texture, taste, aroma and even the nutrients in a jamón, depend on three basic factors: its feed, its breed and the environment in which it is bred.

The feed factor: bellota or cebo

The major differentiating factor that distinguishes the Iberian jamón, and for which it is so highly prized (according 90% of consumers), is its taste. And herein lies the crux.

Although there are four different categories of feed - Bellota, Cebo, Recebo and Cebo de Campo - the reality is that the latter two apply to only 3% of the total production of Iberian jamón in 2010. Which is why at the retail end, we will probably only see the first two.

Bellota means acorn. A pig fed on acorns and grasses in a dehesa (pasture) at the fattening stage, will be called de Bellota. The other kind is called de Cebo because it has been fed all along on composite feeds made up mainly of grain and legumes.

The type of fat on Iberian jamón depends in good measure on what the pig has been fed on. Acorns are rich in oleic acid, the same as is contained in olive oil and will thus help in increasing 'good cholesterol' (HDL) and reduce the 'bad' kind (LDL). But acorns also give Iberian jamón its intense taste, as well as its texture and aroma. The fat from a plate of good acorn-fed jamón will almost melt in the mouth - one way of measuring its worth, except you will have to have bought it by then. But why? Because a pig that has been free to roam on a dehesa all its life is pretty well stress free. That plus the exercise in finding its own food give it the colour of its meat and the texture that is so characteristic of this delicacy.

The breed factor: the difference between Iberian and Pure Iberian

According to the Quality Regulations (approved by Royal Decree in 2007), the Pure Iberian jamón can come only from Pure Iberian pigs, male and female, that are inscribed in the genealogical register for that breed. Like a Thoroughbred horse, or a Crufts Champion, in other words.

A pig that comes from crossing a female Pure Iberian with a male Duroc (the most common 'other' breed) or a mixture of both, will get its jamón called Iberian, but nothing else. Both, or either, categories must be clearly indicated on the labels, at the retail establishment and at the restaurant or bar table.

The breeding environment

There is little similarity in a jamón that comes from a pig that has been free-range bred, compared to that of one coming from an animal in captivity, even though both are submitted to rigorous controls, not only of the place they are bred, but also in the manner it is slaughtered and processes thereafter.

An Pure Iberian pig fattened out in a pasture is absolutely coherent with its environment - which makes the breeding of Iberian pigs a very sustainable agricultural pursuit. Each pig must have at least one hectare of dehesa for its proper acorn feeding, and it must be there for a minimum of 60 days before slaughter. This, coupled with the time allotted to its growth (14 months, as opposed to the 10 demanded of simple Iberians). Which is one reason why the price for an Ibérico Puro de Bellota or an Ibérico de Bellota is that much higher. The same rule of thumb applies to free-range eggs or chickens, for instance.

Your choice

In the end it is your choice, which is made easier with enough information to recognize the difference in breeds (Puro Ibérico and Ibérico) and the feed (Bellota or Cebo). Also, this basic information will be enough to make an educated choice when standing in front of a counter full of hanging hams you can't tell the difference - and then we make the decision according to our tastes and pockets.

Why, you may ask, is this brought up now, a couple of days away from Christmas? Because every Spanish home that is able to, will have a jamón ready to carve in the thinnest possible slivers to offer guests as they come by with seasonal greetings. ¡Feliz Navidad!

Julián Muñoz and Del Nido get seven and a half years in prison

MARBELLA (Agencies) The former mayor of Marbella, Julián Muñoz, was sentenced yesterday to seven and a half years in jail for his part in the Minutas case, an spin-off of the Malaya case, Spain's largest. The judge also sentenced the President of Sevilla Football Club, José María del Nido, to the same time in jail - plus payment of €3,058,505 and €2.7 million respectively, and are barred from public office for 15 years. The alleged head of the Malaya case, also involved in this one, Juan Antonio Roca, got 4 years in jail. The case arises from a systematic 'decapitalization' of the Marbella treasury, called Minutas because this is another word for bills, as presented by lawyers (Del Nido is one), but which in this case were presented between 1999 and 2003, but no legal work done for them. The case can be appealed to the Supreme Court but there is no news that they will be.

At first glance (and these monkeys are no experts on rats) the reason it is close to the ground is because their usual habitat is in the palm trees. But these are, or have already, succumbed to the dreaded red palm weevil that has devastated the area's palm trees due principally to official neglect. We first reported it in October 2008!

GIBRALTAR (Press release) The Royal Gibraltar Police has received information to the effect that a Credit Card scam is currently being carried out on members of the public in Gibraltar. The scam involves the victim receiving a telephone call from somebody claiming to be from Microsoft. The victim is then informed that there is a serious virus on their computer and that they have a programme which will remove it for a standard fee. The caller, who calls himself James Smith then asks for the credit card and personal details. Once they have this they are able to use it to make illegal purchases on the Internet.The RGP says it wishes to bring this to the notice of the public. Microsoft, a reputable company, would not call up and ask for credit card details in such a manner. The RGP urges members of the public not to give out any information regarding their credit cards to anyone who they do not know.The RGP also wishes to highlight the need to protect personal data relating to credit cards. Documents such as account statements and even transaction slips will contain card details, which the fraudsters can use to scam their victims. Therefore due care should be taken when disposing of these types of items to prevent them coming into the hands of criminals.If any member of the public requires advice on this matter they can contact the Financial Crime Unit of the RGP on telephone No. 20072954.

Ten arrested in weekend operations in Tesorillo

JIMENA / San Martín del Tesorillo The Guardia Civil detained a total of ten people in two separate incidents over last weekend. The first incident was a street fight outside a disco, in which six were arrested. The quarrel also involved others who were severely injured and needed medical attention. The second involved four people who allegedly set fire to a car, having previously damaged it heavily, and which spread to another two vehicles in the immediate vicinity. The fire also caused damage to the Town Hall offices as well as the post office. All the arrested are now 'at the disposal of the courts'.

Firecrackers are illegal until New Year's Eve

Local police warn that letting off fireworks or firecrackers of any kind are illegal until New Year's Eve. Sales are also illegal unless by a properly authorized establishment meeting stringent standards and requirements. Fines can be up to €3,000 for illegal sales. If you can identify someone either letting off a firecracker before the time, or identify someone selling them illegally, you can make a denuncia at the Local Police station. We spied with our little eye three people who had evidently got together to coordinate their outfits and were headed to the Oba Fayre. They looked happy and we were allowed to take a photo. But why was Oliver not dressed up, too?

JIMENA Strange things were seen at the Christmas Fayre yesterday. We were only there for a few minutes as this is a busy weekend, but long enough to see familiar faces, and others not so familiar. A good selection of items but not a lot of space - wonder what happened as the crowds crowded in? We are also reliably informed that the karaoke night went down a storm, which may or may not have anything to do with the rain that came down in the night. Hope everyone enjoyed it. (We're off to yet another Christmas do up the street, today.)

They do it every year at the Pensioners' Day Centre. And every year we get down on our knees to bring you the photos of the Nativity scene. You'd have thought that one set of pictures is enough, but no, it changes every time. Our favourite piece is one called caganer in Catalan (from where we believe it originates), which we translate as 'the crapper'. But don't be struck by misplaced horror: not only does the little figure bring luck, they say (which may be why last year's crapper was stolen), but it is also a measure of the humanity of the times we now consider 'sacred'. And anyway, in that context the crapper makes a lot more sense than Father Christmas, doesn't it? We're not sure about the hanging hams in Bethlehem, year 3758 in the Jewish calendar - maybe the Kosher laws hadn't evolved that far - in any case, we're not about to quibble pedantically as usual. Besides, it's well worth taking a look and getting a coffee at the bar (no, you don't have to be a pensioner), where a visit is sure to be appreciated.
